Best Table Saw in 2018 – A Comparison Review Guide For First Timers

Don't Feel Like Reading? Here Is Our Top Choice

If you are looking for the best table saw on the market then make sure to take the DEWALT DW745 Table Saw under consideration.

It has a high quality 24 toothed carbide blade and it produces a staggering 3,850 RPM easily without affecting the cutting speed. This table saw offers a boatload of tools, accessories and stability improvements over its competitors and is backed up with a robust lifetime guarantee. This is a compact contractor table saw. It is perfect for fieldwork and any range of DIY projects.

Woodworking and on-site construction are not my forte’, but I dabble a lot in both fields for many reasons. You’d understand this theory if you have been working with lumber for a long time; everything about it just seems so intriguing.

You start off with a DIY project here and there; maybe a couple of training videos on the internet, and the next thing you know is the same ol’ ‘Hey-this-seems-like-a-cool-project’ dilemma. Things seldom turn out as per the tutor instructions, or whatever he made by the end of the project.

Part of the reason as to why my first bookrack seemed wonky was because I wasn’t using a good cutting power tool. It was a small handsaw; the measurements were lined down using a carpenter pencil, and things just got out of control.

What I learned from that experience several years ago was that had I used a good quality handheld saw, or a table saw for that matter, the DIY project may have finished differently. This best table saw review write up is my way of redeeming for those early “woodworker” mistakes, which everyone stumbles upon at the start of their career.

It Takes Longer than You Think…

Buying a table saw for the first time is not easy. I thought it’d be easy for me to watch a couple of videos, try out a few tutorials and then go with a particular brand. It wasn’t that simple. I was dead wrong because there are different techniques involved in cutting wood panels, DIY projects and vice versa. All these components are like building blocks in woodworking.

Also, I didn’t have any knowledge about dado blades or bevel angle cuts. Circular saws are easy to operate as long as bevel cuts are concerned, but when you are working with table saws, it’s an entirely different game out there.

It is true that table saws are very simple in their construction, but there are a lot of aspects that count. The mere absence or presence of a particular “small” feature can act as a means to an end – sometimes the entire project outcome depends on it.

Doing Your Basic Table Saw Comparison Review Homework:

There are hundreds of table saws out there – therefore, it was not literally possible for me to write about each and every brand. However, I did handpick a few models that were up to a certain standard worth recommending.

But hey! If you are not into reading stuff, just go out there and survey the market. Talk to different dealers; mention your expectations vs. project specifications, and you will eventually settle down for a specific brand. The reason I am going to talk about the best table saw for 2018 in the appended paragraphs is because the following products were personally tested by me.

Everyone at Powertoolbuzz recommends stuff which has been tried, trusted and considered for reliability against competitor products.

  • Type of Table Saw: Make sure that you have a blueprint for the type of table saw you are looking for. By “blueprint”, I mean a rough idea concerning the level of results you expect from your table saw. If you want to go for small level details, such is fancy boxes, table stands and book racks with biscuit joints, buy a 10 inch blade table saw. Likewise, if you are looking to fell a few logs, go for a cabinet table saw or a hybrid category cutting tool.
  • Safety Mechanism is Essential: Never ever buy a table saw which doesn’t have standard safety options. Working with power tools is a risky business; sometimes it can cost you dearly. It’s not worth fussing over a few extra bucks if you are looking to make a one-time investment in a decent power tool for years to come.
  • Table Saw Motor Options: I wrote at length about different motor types; direct drive, worm drive – so on and so forth. The latter category is robust and equally powerful. But if precision is your objective, direct drive table saws are ideal.
  • Fence, Miter Gauge and Accessories: These are the items that make the entire experience all the more enhanced. Out of the three, the most important thing on a table saw is the miter gauge. You don’t want your cuts to be inaccurate, do you? Then comes the table saw fence – the stuff that determines ease of use to some extent.

Take a look below at some of the best table saws that I selected for you. All of these were individually reviewed at Powertoolbuzz; you can read those reviews by visiting the table saw category section at this website.

Our Pick of the Day: Dewalt DW745 10 Inch Job Site Table Saw

This is an ideal tool for intermediate level and seasonal users. Also, if you look at the site pro modular build quality, and different safety features, you are practically investing in a very stable product.

Some of the main features of Dewalt DW745 series table saw are listed below:

  • check
    Comes with standard guarding system.
  • check
Modular build quality ensures the use of extension cords and aftermarket parts.
  • check
Rack and pinion fence system with  dedicated roll cage. Dewalt wanted to work on the fence to help refine the user experience for professional wood workers. This new fence system needs a bit of practice to get used to, but it is totally worth it.
  • check
Dewalt has also included on board storage bays for helping people with storing tools and accessories that come with this table saw.
  • check
Out of the box, this product only weighs in around 50 Lbs. It is easy to move around, and eliminates the need for a portable wheel stand.

Includes a high quality 24 toothed carbide blade.

**Don’t forget to read about carbide blades in the latter sections of this article. You can also carry out your own research on carbide vs. stainless steel blades dilemma. The safest bet would be to buy table saws and cutting tools with carbide “tipped” blades. They offer a safe haven to those who do not want to remain stuck with bent tips or hefty repair bills.

bosch table saw

Source:Bosch

Bosch is the brain and brawn of electronics to a great extent. They have an even greater reach in the international market, especially in Asia and South Asia regions. I tried their electronic items initially before dipping my feet in the power tools niche. Bosch’s AC splitters, high resistance circuit breakers and plugs are extremely reliable.

Table saws were a different niche’, and to be honest, I bought the Bosch 4100-09 10-Inch Worksite Table Saw on a whim. Since I trusted the company, I figured that buying their table saw won’t be a loss of energy and hard earned cash. This is a great product with a multitude of on board perks.

Pros

  • Heavy duty table saw with solid build quality.
  • Different features on Bosch 4100-09 10-Inch Worksite Table Saw make it worth the investment. Think about blade height adjustment, on board storage options, state of the art miter gauge etc. – you are practically looking at a long term companion for an enthusiast power tool aficionado.
  • Bosch 4100-09 comes with an extra factory supplied table stand. This one’s got wheel lock system with rubberized coating to help keep the mobility factor to an all time high.
  • Includes a 15 Amp base power motor with a cumulative 3,600+ RPM speed.

Cons

  • Requires long term maintenance. Bosch products seem to have a knack for gear oil, grease and cleaning accessories.
  • Price is a little steep for first time buyers. If you are a pro, or an intermediate level user, I see no reason for not buying this table saw.
  • Compared to other products, the Bosch 4100-09 model offers a small work area. Since the blade diameter is only 10 Inches, and the top fence only has a limited coverage area, you are somewhat limited from working at your full capacity.

Craftsman Evolv is more like a hit and miss case for table saw owners. I was unfortunate for ending up with a faulty unit, but that shouldn’t be a reason to discourage you from buying this amazing product. Craftsman Evolv 28461 model is all about affordability and getting the basic cutting maneuvers done in a legit manner.

The manufacturers wanted to create a table saw for entry level users who are more into DIY projects as compared to professional contractors. Only buy this model if you have to. The unit I bought came with a misaligned blade and faded miter gauge. If you have read my Craftsman Evolv 28461 table saw review before, you know what I am talking about.

craftsman table saw parts

Source:Craftsman

I contacted a few friends in the industry and they told me that the blade misalignment issue is not persistent in the entire product lineup. Maybe I was the one and only case who had to have that unit. Anyhow, some of the main highlights and setbacks of Craftsman Evolv 28461 10 Inch table saw are appended below.

Pros

  • Includes a “state of the art” hex safety key for locking out the table saw when it is not in use. You will need to insert and turn the key to be able to operate the table saw again.
  • Craftsman Evolv products are cheap overall. They are easy to buy and don’t require that much maintenance.
  • Online visitors can purchase this particular model at much lower rates from 3rd party websites.
  • Overall lightweight table saw. Given that you have to move from one job site to another, the portability factor on this table saw is awesome.
  • Includes detailed user manual, assembly instructions and minor maintenance tips for first timers.

Cons

  • Cheap build quality.
  • That “state of the art” hex safety key can wear out very quickly. If you want to remain on the safe side, you should contact Craftsman Evolv for a spare set, or you can order a spare set of keys from a local locksmith. The latter sounds more convenient as you will never run out of keys!
  • Some units are faulty. Craftsman Evolv doesn’t admit this but some of the 28461 series table saw models have a misaligned blade. This will directly impact your cuts, so watch out!
  • Craftsman Evolv 28461 table saw model is not compatible with dado blade sets.
makita table saw

Source:Makita

Next one on the list is Makita with their trusty ol’ model: 2705. This is a 10-Inch Contractor category table saw, and it is laced with high performance, dependability and solid build quality. These are few main traits that table saw lovers look for whenever they are prowling for a decent power tool.

My only gripe with the Makita 2705 series is that it comes with a 10 inch blade. This is not a particular setback for general users, but professionals tend to avoid table saws with smaller blade sets. The size restricts them from taking on bigger projects. Out of the box, this table saw may be a little difficult for you to assemble. However, Makita has included a diagram based instructions manual to help ease the assembly process.

You can also watch a few YouTube videos if it is your first time with this table saw. Overall, it is a good substitute for a hybrid table saw. Hybrid power tools can be expensive, so Makita made something to help intermediate users with affordability issues.

Pros

  • This unit is more of an open source product. You can customize the table saw to your liking if you are into creating a makeshift fence, portable top stand and bottom stand.
  • Although Makita 2705 10-Inch Contractor Table Saw is a bit heavy, one person can lift it without any extra help. I wouldn’t recommend moving it a lot, unless and until you have a wheel stand.
  • Makita is offering additional add-on products for this model at Amazon.
  • Blade lock feature makes it convenient for woodworkers to make angled/ beveled cuts.

Cons

  •  Remember the part where I talked about customization options? This could be a major setback for folks who expect their table saws as a plug n’ play unit out of the box.
  • Does not have a very good dust collection system.
  • Requires regular maintenance and cleaning.
  • Some replacement parts may be difficult to purchase.

SKIL 3410-02 was released as an alternative option for those who couldn’t purchase the Bosch 4100 series table saw. If you have been an avid Powertoolbuzz follower, you know by now that I have written briefly in a couple of reviews about Bosch and Skil being the same companies under different names.

Well, not exactly the same, but Bosch does own SKIL and that's all there is to it. The two manufacturers release somewhat identical products with the inclusion or exclusion of certain key features. This phenomenon affects pricing – and hence maintains a healthy sense of competition between both companies.

SKIL 3410-02 Portable Table Saw is a marvelous power tool with overall satisfying results. The only apparent flaw with this model is the miter gauge’s dim readings. In a table saw owners’ world, it is all about measurements. Therefore, if the miter gauge is not on point, it affects the end users’ work output.

skil table saw 3410

Source:Skil

You can tweak a few settings to get by with good results, but I wouldn’t recommend taking a SKIL 3410-02 table saw out on a professional job site. Heck, if you are a contractor, you cannot risk an entire woodworking project’s integrity because of the miter gauge.

Pros

  • Comes with a foldable company made table. It has a cross legged folding mechanism with high quality joints. You can put extra weight on the table whenever it is needed. However, if you have time, make sure that you weld the joints with a blow torch.
  • Includes the EZ view system to help adjust saw fence alignment.
  • Comparatively cheaper model as compared to other table saws with more or less same amount of features.
  • SKIL 3410-02 table saw has a 3 year limited warranty.

Cons

  • Skil should have included a carry bag or protective casing. Table saws don’t have a carry bag, but some users have complained about protective casing covers. The latter is a much needed perk for those woodworkers who leave their table saws at the mercy of a storage room.
  • This table saw has a high noise emission ratio.
  • Miter gauge seems to be faded. The readings are accurate but they are not sharp. I did a bit of research and found out the problem to be persistent in the entire SKIL 3410-02 Portable Table Saw product lineup. Seems like they outsourced the miter gauge production to some amateur 3rd party manufacturer.
Skilsaw table saw review

Source:SKILSAW

This is where things get groovy for hardcore wood workers. The SPT99-11 10" model by Skil comes with the guarantee and comfort factor which idealists yearn for whenever they take on big scale contracts. I like to think that SKIL released the SPT99-11 10" worm drive table saw model to make up for the absence of features that weren’t there in the 3410-02 series.

Plus, there’s a worm drive motor in this unit too. You can expect a high yield from this table saw. This is a fully fledged unit, except for the potential impact on your electricity consumption bill. Anything with a worm drive motor consumes more voltage as compared to a direct drive.

Pros

  • The SPT99 series comes with a lot of tools and accessories. You get your standard spanner set, screws, on board storage options and few other perks. This model also has stand hands for users who prefer ergonomics over standardized aspects of a product.
  • SPT99-11 10" worm drive table saw is available both with and without a table stand. There is a price difference at some online retailer websites, but if I were you, I’d go for the table stand version.
  • Includes a dedicated tool kit with a spare dust port elbow.
  • Convenient sawdust collection and emission system. SKIL introduced an elbow sleeve to separate saw dust and debris particles. You can adjust the elbow’s face towards a dustbin that can be placed under the table.
  • Although the blade only has a 10 inch diameter, SPT99-11 worm drive saw was made to assist users against bigger projects. If you need to make single line cuts on huge sheets, you can use the outfeed and left support system on the fence for that.

Cons

  • Might be a little expensive for budget conscious users.
  • Fence movement system is entirely new, which is a good thing. However, it needs a bit of getting used to.

Dewalt DW745 may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but this table saw has got a lot going on under the hood. Beyond the striking bold yellow color theme, this table saw offers a boatload of tools, accessories and stability improvements over its predecessors. As usual, this product comes backed up with a robust lifetime guarantee. Rest assured, you can easily find parts and replacements from company reps located anywhere within the States.

This is a compact contractor table saw. It is perfect for fieldwork and any range of DIY projects. The overall noise emission is low, which ensures that you can use the product within residential areas if it comes to that. Normally, I like to work in my garage, or prefer a separate work area where my neighbors don’t interfere with my sh*t. Since power tools can be a lot noisy, you have to be careful with their placement and setting.

dewalt portable table saw

Source:Dewalt

The reason I am recommending the DW745 Dewalt table saw as being the best table saw is because it seems to be an all rounder type of power tool. Price wise, it is not too high as if to discourage first timers from making a purchase. Likewise, the price isn’t set too low, so that professional buyers are made to think that maybe the table saw quality is inferior to other products.

Pros

  • Crank device works like a charm. You can easily move the blade up or down with fewer number of rotations. Think of it as a power steering.
  • Dewalt DW745 compact job site table saw is backed up by a 90 day ‘no questions asked’ return policy, and an extended warranty.
  • Produces a staggering 3,850 RPM easily without affecting the cutting speed.
  • Blade is adjustable for angle cuts. You can also lock it to maintain precision factor.
  • State of the art sawdust extraction and collection port. This feature comes as a blessing for table saw owners who like to keep their work place squeaky clean.
  • Offers standard OSHA certified safety features. You still need to weak protective head gear and gloves for maximum protection against unforeseen hazards.

Cons

  • This model does not have a dedicated table stand. Since the table saw’s actual weight is only around 45 – 50 Lbs., I don’t think you need a table for it.
  • It is not compatible with dado blades.

Note on Carbide Tipped Blade:

Carbide is a tough material and offers a wide range of usefulness over stainless steel counterparts. However, if the blade tips are bent, or there is evidence of physical deformity, carbide parts need to be properly repaired by an expert.

This is one of the main reasons as to why people prefer table saws with stainless steel blades. As stated at the beginning of this post, the best bet would be to invest in carbide tipped blades. These are standard blades with carbide tips to ensure the high amount of toughness vs. resilience factor as normally expected from solid carbide made products.

Conclusion:

The aforementioned table saws in this best table saw review are just the tip of the iceberg; the power tool market extends over thousands of brands and products by the day. In time, this table saw review will get an update with the slight inclusion of latest models of table saws.

You are more than welcome to do your own research. If you are thinking of online shopping, my advice would be to consult with fellow table saw users at different forums. It is the one place where the user community honestly expresses their opinions about a table saw, which stuff works and which doesn’t and many other things.

The models discussed in this comparison review were tried and tested for their performance. I made an effort to isolate each table saw’s case as a unique opportunity to measure its output. This helped me to eliminate a lot of unnecessary brands and products in the long run.

I understand that within the next few months, these same companies will come up with better table saw models with perkier benefits and features. Therefore, don’t forget to pay Powertoolbuzz a visit from time to time; I’ll be adding a lot more to this post via a dedicated updates system.
